WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event 2026 – Introduction
WWE brought its Sunday Night’s Main Event PPV 9/6/26 franchise to Atlanta, Georgia, this Labor Day weekend, but with a twist — for the first time in the show’s history, the special aired on a Sunday rather than its usual Saturday slot. Therefore, billed as Sunday Night’s Main Event, the 46th overall episode went down live from State Farm Arena.
The show filled the gap between SummerSlam and Money in the Bank, with the date originally earmarked for Money in the Bank before that premium live event was shifted to October 10 in New Orleans. Furthermore, Atlanta previously played host to the franchise in July 2025, when Gunther retired WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg in the final match of his career. As a result, this year’s event carried significant historical weight.
This time, there was no retirement bout on the line, but the stakes remained high as Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton renewed hostilities, with a same-night title opportunity also up for grabs elsewhere on the card. Moreover, Atlanta native Quavo opened the show with a live musical performance. Consequently, 123 wrestling fans were treated to a memorable night of action.

Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton – The Main Event
Randy Orton’s shock return at SummerSlam saw him hit Cody Rhodes with an RKO, costing “The American Nightmare” his shot at reclaiming the Undisputed WWE Championship from CM Punk. Therefore, that moment has snowballed into one of WWE’s most personal rivalries of the year, and it finally boiled over in Atlanta.
Perhaps the most unique part of this build-up came following SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis’ declaration on August 21, when he stated that if either competitor lays a hand on the other, they will be stripped of any future WWE Undisputed Championship opportunities. Consequently, this past Friday, both men tried to provoke a physical fight by bringing up each other’s families, but shockingly, neither man took the bait.
Furthermore, on the SmackDown after SummerSlam, Rhodes demanded Orton explain why he cost him his title match against CM Punk. As a result, this prompted Orton to declare that as long as there’s air in his lungs, his mission is to make sure Rhodes never holds a world championship again. Moreover, 123 wrestling fans were on the edge of their seats for this epic showdown.
